Digital Reformation Happening Now
Tweet If You ♥ Jesus author says social media is extension
of ancient Christian practice; visits Chicago on June 2
New York, NY, May 17, 2011—The next Reformation is happening on Facebook, according to Santa Clara University professor Elizabeth Drescher, author of the new book Tweet if You ♥ Jesus: Practicing Church in the Digital Reformation.
On Thursday, June 2 at 7 pm, Drescher will speak and sign books at All Saints’ Episcopal Church, 4550 North Hermitage Avenue in Chicago. The event is free and open to the public and is sponsored by Seabury Western Theological Seminary. All Saints’ is accessible via the Brown Line El to Damen, the 145 Michigan Avenue bus to Wilson, and the Union Pacific North Line to the Ravenswood stop. Parking is available one block west of the church along Ravenswood Avenue and on surrouding streets.
In her new book, Drescher explains that social media, such as Facebook and Twitter, are both powerful tools for the practice of Christian faith and a great challenge to modern understandings of what it means to be a friend, a spiritual companion, or a member of a community. “What does it mean to ‘love your neighbor’ in a world in which a ‘friend’ might as easily be the kid from down the street you grew up with as a woman in Botswana whom you’ve never seen in person and only know in the context of Facebook…?” she asks in the book’s introduction.
