Roger Ferlo to Lead Federation of Seabury and Bexley

COLUMBUS, March 27, 2012--At historic meetings this month, the boards of Seabury Western Theological Seminary in Chicago and Bexley Hall in Columbus unanimously voted to federate and to elect the Rev. Roger Albert Ferlo, Ph.D., D.D., as the Federation’s first president.

Bexley and Seabury Open Joint President Search

The boards of Seabury Western Seminary and Bexley Hall have appointed a joint search committee to seek a single president for both institutions. Suggestions of names and applications are due November 11.

“The president we seek will have an entrepreneurial spirit and the ability to manage change and think creatively,” said the Rev. Dr. Gwynne Wright, chair of Seabury’s board of trustees and co-chair of the search committee. “We invite applications from non-traditional applicants as well as people with experience in academic theology.”

For much of the past year, the leaders of Bexley Hall in Columbus, Ohio and Seabury-Western Theological Seminary in Chicago, Illinois, have traveled across the country talking with laypeople, clergy, and bishops about the kind of leadership the Episcopal Church needs for the 21st century. Too often, people who love the church said that they are afraid that it will not survive the century—that there will be no Episcopal Church for their grandchildren.

EVANSTON, September 23, 2011—Officials at Seabury Western Theological Seminary announced today that the school will move from suburban Evanston into space at the Lutheran Center, the headquarters of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) in Chicago.

Paula Barker accepts call to Maryland

Former Seabury faculty member The Rev. Dr. Paula Barker, has accepted a call as Associate Rector of St. Thomas' Episcopal Church in Owings Mills, MD.    Paula noted that the work focuses on creating opportunities for adult education and formation, along with cultivation of lay ministries. She said, " I'm very excited about it all, even in the midst of moving."    During her time at Seabury, she held various positions, starting with Assistant Professor of Historical Theology.  Barker was also vice president and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, and ended her time at Seabury as Professor of Christian History and Spirituality.

EVANSTON, Illinois—Tom Ehrich, writer, church consultant and priest, will be the guest speaker at the 153rd  Commencement of Seabury-Western Theological Seminary at 9:30 am Friday, May 13, in the Chapel of St. John the Divine at the seminary.

Ehrich, the founder of New York City-based Morning Walk Media Inc., writes a nationally syndicated newspaper column on faith and ethics for Religion News Service and publishes daily and weekly writings. He is the author of several books, including Just Wondering, Jesus:100 Questions People Want to Ask (Morehouse Publishing, 2005), and Church Wellness (Morehouse division of Church Publishing Inc., 2008).
