Maybe It Was the Bat!

I just received a replacement bat for my Synergy 2 (it cracked). It is the new Synergy Flex, and so far it is awesome! I've used it the past two nights and I have gone 6-7 with it. I can feel some pop coming back too.

Tonight my Wed. night team, the Cavemen, won our opening round playoff game against a #2 seed. This team crushed us twice during the regular season. We came out firing, scoring 13 runs in the second inning. The final score was 21-7. We actually won by the slaughter rule (up by more than 10 runs after five innings). My new bat worked like a charm. I went 4 for 4, scored 2 runs and had 2 rbis. The Cavemen won the Skokie league 12-in. softball league two years ago. Maybe the magic has returned.

It makes me feel good to know that Chicagoland is still a place where you have to specify that it's a "12-inch softball league." Have you played any 16-inch ball yet? It's a whole new world...

No, I have not played any 16-inch yet, nor do I want to. It is a novelty in the Chicago area, esp. since it originated here I believe. Still, 16-in strikes me as kick ball with a bat.

Okay... keeping in mind that my first softball game ever was this year's All-SWTS game... what is the difference between 12-inch and whatever-inch softball? Cuz if one is easier, I'd like to know...

The inches refer to the ball's circumference. Most men's and co-rec slow-pitch leagues use 12-inch softballs. Women's fastpitch also uses 12-inch balls. There are some women's slow pitch and co-rec leagues that use 11-inch balls.

16-inch softball originated, I believe, in Chicago. The softballs are gushy and big--about the size of a grapefruit. Since they are softer and bigger, players usually don't play with gloves, although in co-rec 16-inch leagues women will sometimes play with gloves.
