How To Give

How to Make an Electronic Gift
Donors to Seabury can make a gift electronically by using Visa or MasterCard. To make an electronic contribution, call the Development Office at 800-275-8235 ext. 43. Thank you!

Other Ways to Make a Gift
Most donors make their gifts with cash (checks), credit cards or securities. Seabury's legal name is Seabury-Western Theological Seminary. That full name should be used in transferring securities, but checks made out simply to Seabury Seminary are also quite satisfactory. If you need information on transferring securities please call the Development Office.

Unrestricted contributions are most welcome for they allow the seminary to direct funds to areas of greatest need. Donors may choose to specify the use of their gifts, such as for scholarships or other programs, and should indicate that perference at the time the gift is made.

The Development Office makes every effort to acknowledge gifts within 24 hours of their receipt. By trustee resolution, all gifts of securities are sold by the seminary's broker immediately upon receipt, unless directed otherwise by the donor.. Proceeds from the sale of such securities may be delayed in reaching the seminary, and thus acknowledgements of those gifts may be similarly delayed.

Various Forms of Giving
There are other ways to make contributions to Seabury, including:

Establishing an endowment

Including Seabury in your will or estate plan

Transferring gifts of property or real estate

Making a gift that will provide income for life

Making gifts-in-kind

All gifts, or questions regarding them, should be sent to the Development Office, 2122 Sheridan Road, Evanston, Illinois, 60201.

Dean Gary Hall Announces New Director of Development and New Director of Communications

I'm writing to let you know that I have made two important appointments to Seabury's administrative staff which will take effect May 1, 2005:

First, I have appointed the Reverend Elizabeth Slaughter Butler '97, Director of Development. Elizabeth comes to us from the Church of the Holy Comforter in Kenilworth, Illinois, where she has been on staff for several years, most recently in the capacity as Senior Associate Rector. Elizabeth came to Seabury after graduating from Harvard College and received the Women’s Board Award for Excellence among other honors during her time here. Elizabeth brings vision, faith, intelligence, and creativity to this new ministry, and I believe her unique combination of skills and commitments is precisely the mix that will help Seabury build relationships and increase giving among all the seminary's friends and constituencies.

Additionally, I have asked Connie Wilson, our Associate Director of Development and Alumi/ae Programs to begin her new ministry as Director of Communications on May 1 as well.

Giving Opportunities: Endowment Giving

Gifts to Seabury's endowment fund are vitally important to the seminary's long term ability to sustain the high quality of its programs and its capacity for leading edge innovation.

Gifts of all sizes for endowment purposes are welcome. Many donors take advantage of tax savings in their contributions for endowment with cash gifts, gifts through wills or estate plans, insurance policies, securities, real estate, retirement funds, trusts and other financial intruments. (See Lydia Hibbard Society.)

Endowment funds held by educational insititutions are typically those funds where the principal or corpus is held permanently with earnings designated for use as directed by the donor. For example, a $1,000 gift to the general scholarship endowment fund would be permanently held and invested by Seabury with the earnings used each year to support student scholarships.

Giving Opportunities: Capital Giving

Capital Gifts are typically those which help fund new construction, renovate or remodel existing facilities or purchase major equipment and furnishings. Seabury welcomes such gifts to meet its present needs, which include upgrading student housing, providing chapel furnishings, and other important structural and landscaping opportunities.

Seabury is in the final stages of preparation for a major capital campaign which will also indentify critical needs for endowment funds to support student scholarships and provide faculty chairs. For information contact Elizabeth Butler at 800-275-8235 ext. 41.

Giving Opportunities: Seabury Fund

The Seabury Fund includes all contributions to be used for any purpose within the seminary's budget for current operations. Such gifts may be used for, or offset, budgeted costs for scholarships, salaries, maintenance and any other items included in the seminary's annual operating budget.

Gifts to the Seabury Fund are commonly made with no designation which allows the seminary to allocate those gifts for priority needs, such as scholarships. Donors may, however wish to designate the use of their gifts, such as for library or special programs. The seminary always honors such designations.

The Seabury Fund is synonymous with annual fund or annual giving. Such gifts represent more than 20% of Seabury's annual operating budget, a fact that underscores their importance. The Seabury Fund does not include any gifts for endowment or capital purposes.
