Professor Paula Barker Leads England Pilgrimage

WhitbyWeb

Nineteen pilgrims set out on July 22 to experience sites like this in a travel course, “Exploring the Foundations of English Spirituality,” led by Seabury’s Professor Paula Barker. The group included students, graduates, and friends of the seminary. Photos of the trip may be viewed at Seabury’s photo album site.

Beginning in Edinburgh with worship at a church dedicated to St. Columba, the group visited Melrose Abbey, the Holy Isle of Lindisfarne, Bede’s monastery at Jarrow, shrines in Durham Cathedral, Whitby, Rievalux Abbey, York Minster, Julian’s shrine at Norwich, Norwich Cathedral, and Canterbury Cathedral with the adjacent site of Augustine’s monastery containing his grave. Services of morning and night prayer blended from Celtic and contemporary forms, together with daily eucharists, helped to form the pilgrimage experience. Besides presentations from Paula and local guides, participants also learned from research projects prepared by Seabury students. Returning on July 31, we continue to follow paths of God’s leading, with grace-filled memories of saints and holy places inhabiting our steps. Joyce Beaulieu, Seabury M.Div. student and pilgrim
