Seabury Academic and Service Awards for 2005

Awarded during the Eucharist on May 26, 2005, the following annual awards were given:

The Hebrew Bible Prize - Ryan Whitley
(greatest promise in mastering the Hebrew language)

The Victoria L. Garvey Award in Hebrew Scriptures - John Hickey
(given for the most outstanding research paper or creative presentation in the study of the Hebrew scriptures)

The Frederick Clifton Grant Prize in New Testament - not awarded this year
(given for the best essay in the fields of New Testament, Judaism in the Hellenistic and Roman periods and Greco-Roman religions)

The Lloyd E. Mentzer Award in Church History - Laura Gottardi-Littell
(given for the best written work in the field of church history)

The Julian Victor Casserly Award in Theology and Society - Michelle Warriner Bolt
(given for the best written work in the field of church history)

The W. Taylor Stevenson Award in Contemporary Theology - Joyce Beaulieu
(given for the best essay in theology dealing with recent theologians or current theological issues)

The Seabury-Western Music Award - not awarded this year
(given to the student in his or her final year who has made a significant musical contribution tot he community over the last two years)

The Collaborative Research Award - “Baton Rouge Plunge Team Presentation” team consisting of Marianna Gronek, Shana Price, Mitchell Smith, and Shahar Weaver
(given for the best collaborative research project done by a team including at least two students who are currently enrolled at Seabury. Research must be original with this team and it must require team effort. It may engage another discipline such as Scripture, Church History, Ethics, or Theology, but it must work out the value of the research for application to the life of the church in practical terms.

The Charles T. Mason Award - Susan Shaefer
(given to the graduating student who has made the greatest contribution to the liturgical life of the Seabury community)

The Cantor’s Award - Susan Shaefer
(given for the greatest proficiency in chanting the choral office by a student in the final-year of a program)

The Rev. Robert Hammond Cotton and Jane O. Cotton Memorial Award - Judith Bogdon
(given for the greatest proficiency in the oral reading of the Bible by a final-year student)

The Helen Ledyard Field Prize in Homiletics - Judith Bogdon
(given for the greatest proficiency and promise in preaching by any student in the final-year program)

The Seabury-Western Prize - Mark Moore
(given by the Alumni/ae Association for the outstanding service in a single or in a variety of areas to the Seabury community by a final year student)

Janet Skogen Staff Appreciation Award - Mark Moore
(given to a graduating student who exemplifies and demonstrates qualities which the staff believe are needed by the church, qualities such as gracious presence which contributes to the sense of community, respect for staff, humility and a congenial spirit of cooperation)

The Alden Drew Kelley Award - Michelle Warriner Bolt
(given annually by the Woman’s Board to a middler student who plans to become a full-time priest in the Episcopal Church, and taking into account the student’s academic record and performance as a mature member of the community)

The Woman’s Board Award - Jami Anderson
(given for demonstration of promise for ministry, incorporating qualities of academic excellence, professional skills, spiritual depth, and leadership by a woman student in her final year of a program)

The Henry Hoover Leadership Award - Jane Clark
(given to a final-year student who has exhibited outstanding leadership throughout his or her time at the seminary)

The H. N. Moss Book Award - Judith deChamplain, Michael Fincher and Cliff Haggenjos
(given for the three highest academic records of second-year students, not including the Anderson Scholar)

The Charles Palmerston Anderson Award - Michelle Warriner Bolt
(a bronze medal given for the highest academic performance by a second-year student)

The Mahlon Norris Gilbert Book Award - Jamie Anderson, Andrew Benko, and Leigh VanderMeer
(given for the purchase of a book for the three highest academic records of final-year M.Div. students, not including the Whipple Scholar)

The Henry Benjamin Whipple Award - John Hickey
(a bronze medal given for the highest academic performance by a senior in the M.Div. program)

The above awards are given for a variety of reasons. Some recognize overall academic achievement and/or excellence in the life and worship of the community. Others require the submission of an essay or other piece of work. Some awards are service related. All awards, except the Janet Skogen award, are given with the approval of the full faculty. The Skogen Award receipent is determined by the staff.
