Newland F. Smith 3rd
Newland Smith has been the
librarian at Seabury since receiving his master’s degree in library science from the University of Chicago. He also holds a bachelor of divinity degree from Garrett Theological Seminary. As librarian, Newland offers a course in theological bibliography to incoming students, and is currently involved with the library staff in the immense task of retrospective conversion of the card catalogue to computer formats. Since 1996, Newland has served as academic dean of the seminary. He has been a deputy to General Convention five times, beginning with the convention of 1988. He is committed to the cause of peace with justice for Israelis and Palestinians. He has served as a consultant to the librarian of St. George’s College, Jerusalem, and serves on the Chicago Area Churches for a Shared Jerusalem Committee.
