2008 Graduates

[Seabury-Western Theological Seminary] On May 16, 29 women and men received degrees from Seabury-Western Theological Seminary during commencement services held at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Evanston, Illinois.

Of the 29, eight were Master of Divinity Degrees, two were Master of Theological Studies Degrees, five were Certificates of Advanced Theological Studies, and four were Certificates of Study.

Bishop Steven Charleston, who completed duties as president and dean of Episcopal Divinity School (EDS) in Cambridge, Massachusetts, delivered the commencement address and was the recipient of an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree. Charleston was recently named assistant bishop of California.

Other Doctor of Divinity degree recipients included:

* the Rt. Rev. Robert L. Fitzpatrick, elected fifth bishop of the Diocese of Hawaii in March of last year. He was awarded a Doctor of Ministry in Preaching from Seabury-Western in 1999;
* the Rt. Rev. Shannon S. Johnston, bishop coadjutor of the Diocese of Virginia. He received his Master of Divinity summa cum laude from Seabury-Western in 1988;
* the Rt. Rev. Edward J. Konieczny, elected bishop of Oklahoma on the first ballot last September. He was awarded a Doctor of Ministry in Congregational Development from Seabury in 2001;
* the Rt. Rev. Steven Todd Ousley, elected bishop coadjutor of the Diocese of Eastern Michigan in 2006 and succeeded Bishop Edwin Leidel, the first Bishop of Eastern Michigan, in 2007. He was awarded a Doctor of Ministry in Congregational Development from Seabury in 2004; and
* the Rt. Rev. Dabney Tyler Smith, elected bishop coadjutor of the Diocese of Southwest Florida in 2006 and was seated as the fifth bishop of the diocese in September 2007. He was awarded a Doctor of Ministry in Congregational Development from Seabury in 1999.

In addition, Samuel A. Salas, a layman, was awarded an honorary Doctor of Canon Law. He was Headmaster of Cranbrook School in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan and later served as Head of School at Breck School in Minneapolis. A faithful Roman Catholic layman, Salas gave most of his career to the service of the schools of the Episcopal Church.

Seabury-Western also celebrated its 150th anniversary on May 15 and 16 "in a celebrative if subdued spirit," according to its dean, the Rev. Dr. Gary R. Hall.

Bishops James Jelinek of Minnesota and Jeff Lee of Chicago, Seabury's two diocesan trustee bishops, presided and preached at the special May 15 liturgy that commemorated Enmeghabowh, an early Seabury graduate now listed in Lesser Feasts and Fasts.

Seabury-Western's trustees told the faculty of the school April 24 that their appointments will end June 30, 2009.

The Evanston, Illinois, school also eliminated nine staff positions, effective for most of them on May 23.

The moves came after a special board meeting in which the trustees declared that the seminary "is in [a state of] financial crisis that threatens survival of the institution."

Hall said that recent decisions about faculty and staff positions at Seabury affected everyone's spirits in major ways, [but] "we were all able to come together and give thanks for this wonderful place and its extraordinary history."

He also noted that the May 2008 Annual Board meeting at the seminary marked the end of the terms of the following board officers: Dr. Salme Steinberg, chair; the Rev. Eugene Lowe and James Hawk, vice chairs; Galen Burghardt, treasurer; and Talbot MacCarthy, secretary.

A board nominating committee proposed the following trustees as new officers, and they were elected at the May meeting: Dr. Robert Bottoms, chair; Anne Lea Tuohy and the Rt. Rev. Wendell Gibbs, vice chairs; Roger Lumpp, treasurer; and the Rev. Gwynne Wright, secretary. The new officers began their terms immediately. Hall said they will work with him over the next three years to chart Seabury's course.
