Keeping in Touch - from Fall 2007 Crossroads

2000s

C. Davies Reed, ’07, Assistant Rector at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church in Carmel, IN, was interviewed by The Indianapolis Star to tell about the church’s Children’s Carnival, held earlier this summer. The carnival was made possible by proceeds from the sale of a parish cookbook, the brainchild of a member of the congregation who received $100 in seed money during the rector’s sermon on the Parable of the Tenants.

Meredith Carter Syler, ’07, has accepted a call as Deacon-in-Charge of Trinity Church in Newport, MD. Once she is ordained to the priesthood this winter, Meredith will be serving as Priest-in-Charge. Meredith and her husband, the Rev. Greg Syler, live in Valley Lee, MD, where Greg is the Rector of St. George’s Episcopal Church.

Debra K. Bullock, ’06, has been called as Vicar at St. Barnabas by the Bay in Villas, NJ and as the Assistant to the Rector at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Stone Harbor, NJ. An article in the Cape May County Herald newspaper described the unique joint venture between the two churches that enabled them to hire Debra as their new priest. Siobhán E. Patterson, ’06, has moved to Huntington, WV, where she is the half-time Curate at Trinity Episcopal Church and the half-time Chaplain at Marshall University. Siobhán’s new home address is 920 13th Avenue, Apt. 3, Huntington, WV 25701.

Moki Hino, ’05, has been called as Associate to the Provost at St. Andrew’s Cathedral, Honolulu, HI.

Jeff Bower, ’03, has been appointed Vicar at St. John’s in Speedway, IN (home of the Indianapolis 500). He reports that he is thrilled to be working full-time in parish ministry, having recently transitioned from a clinical setting.

Sharon Kay Gracen, ’00, has written a book, soon to be released, about her experience as the only woman priest in Paris on September 11, 2001, and for the two years following. The book is entitled Le Bon Dieu Aussi S’Habille Prada (“God wears Prada, Too”).

Nancy McLaughlin, DMin Class of 2K, is co-author of a new book, Godparenting: Nurturing the Next Generation. Written with Tracey Herzer, the book looks at the history and theology of godparenting, offering tips and advice on being an effective godparent. Godparenting is available through Morehouse Publishing. Additionally, Nancy is the author of an earlier work, released in 2006. Do You Believe? Living the Baptismal Covenant was also published by Morehouse.

1990s

Andrea Rose-Marie Hayden, ’98, has been the Rector of St. Augustine’s in Asbury Park, NJ, for the past 2 years, and was recently elected vice-president of the Union of Black Episcopalians.

Charlotte Truman, ’97, was appointed Coordinating Chaplain at HMYOI (HM Prison Service), Northallerton, UK.

1980s

Bradley Carter, MTS ’88, is in his second year as an Associate Professor of Military History for the Army’s Command and General Staff College in Ft. Leavenworth, KS, currently assigned to the satellite campus in Ft. Gordon, GA. Bradley is also an active lay member of St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in North Augusta, SC.

David R. MacDonald, ’87, has published his second book this year, entitled Padre E.C. Crosse & The Devonshire Epitaph. The book tells the story of a British Army Chaplain and his experience at the Battle of the Somme in World War I. Padre E.C. Crosse is published by Cloverdale Press.

Robert E. Hensley, ’83, is Rector of Grace Episcopal Church on Martha’s Vineyard, MA. Rob reports that Grace Church’s summer camp for children and adults living with cerebral palsy, Camp Jabberwocky, was written up in a story by the Rev. Mary Jane O’Connor-Ropp, a retired UMC minister who attended a recent Sunday service in which campers are included.

Jean M. Scribner, ’83, retired from active ministry in January 2007 and moved to Asheville, NC. Jean reports that she will be attending the 50th wedding anniversary party of former Seabury dean and his wife, OC and Jane Edwards, along with other Seabury alums. Joshua Sunday Oyinlola, ’82, has served as Archdeacon in the Ijebu Diocese of Nigeria since 1993. He is the author of two recent publications, Understanding Priesthood in the Anglican Church and Beyond Death. Joshua was in Evanston this summer, visiting Seabury’s chaplain, Dan Prechtel. John P. Downey, ’80, and his wife Sharon were elected Co-Chairs of the Conference of North American Cathedral Deans, Spouses and Partners at the 2007 Conference held in Ottawa. This past Easter, John celebrated 20 years as Dean of the Cathedral of St. Paul in Erie, PA.

1960s

Richmond Fitzgerald Thweatt, ’65, has retired from active ministry in the Diocese of Western Louisiana and moved to Oklahoma City, OK, in August 2007.

1950s

Lyle Hampton, ’57, is enjoying his retirement in the San Diego area, including visiting with other Seabury alums in the area. He was recently visted by A. Alden Franklin '55 and James Carol '54.
